Boomers & Beyond
Meet and mingle while we learn about the wonders of nature! Bring your lunch. We'll spend an hour outside exploring, then we will discuss what we saw while we enjoy lunch together. We meet the last Tuesday of each month (except November and December) from 11am - 1pm. Check back soon for a full 2010 Boomers & Beyond Schedule!
Upcoming Boomers & Beyond Programs:
Fungus Amongus - September 28
Join Pete Stobie to learn about the hidden Kingdom. We will learn some basic biology about the fungi and then go and search for some examples on the trail and learn some stories about these mysterious mushrooms and mischievous molds. Bring your lunch, we’ll eat together to finish the program.
Preparing for Winter - October 26
For this gathering we will talk about how to best prepare for Michigan’s snowy winters! Bring your lunch, we’ll eat together and enjoy some sweet treats to finish the program.
Boomers takes a break for the holidays in November and December.
Nature in Winter - January 25
Come learn about snow science and how animals survive our snowy winters. We'll also learn how to identify tracks in the snow. Bring your lunch, we'll eat together and enjoy some sweet treats to finish the program.

Green Living Series

The Green Living Series (GLS) at the Kalamazoo Nature Center is aimed at helping us live with less impact on the natural world. GLS programs are free to the public and occur on the first Tuesday of every odd-numbered month from 6:30 – 8pm. Participants leave each program with simple and inexpensive ideas that can be easily implemented at home.

Natural Soap Making
Tuesday, September 7, 6 – 8 pm
Join Naturalist Judy Packard as she demonstrates how to make your own soap in this interactive workshop. We will learn cold-process soap making with natural oils and lye. We will also rebatch some soap to create your own herbal soaps. Everyone will leave with samples of the soaps we created!
Composting & Vermiculture
Tuesday, November 2, 6:30 – 8 pm
Join AJ Brucks, Director of the Van Buren County Conservation District, as she presents the basics of composting and vermiculture. Alison will bring some tools and tricks to successfully start up your own worm or compost bin. This is a great workshop to get you started for the winter season!

Connecting Women & Nature: Local Harvest Dinner

Costa Rica: Adventures in Nature!
February 18- 27, 2011
There will be a meeting for those interesting in learning more about the trip on August 31, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the Glen Vista Auditorium.
Join us on this exciting adventure as we explore Central America’s jewel. Costa Rica is one of the best places to experience the tropics with minimal impact. The country has a very enlighten approach to conservation as they seek to protect the lush rainforests which are home to monkeys, lizards, sloths, poison-dart frogs exotic birds, insects and butterflies. Our guide will give us an up-close and personal view of the people, wildlife and our surroundings. We will explore jungles high and low to experience the amazing diversity of the most remarkable animals and plants of the world. Highlights will include : A visit to the Arenal Volcanic area, Monteverde Cloud Forest and Womens Co-op, the Osa Peninsula’s Corcovado National Park . We will enjoy exploring, hiking, and kayaking this beautiful country!
Cost: $3850 per person for this 10-day nature expedition. All inclusive from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Includes air fare, accommodations, meals, transfers, and a tax-deductable donation to the Kalamazoo Nature Center. All arrangements will be made through a specified Travel company. Payment of deposit will confirm your place on the trip.

Join Caleb Putnam of the National Audubon Society for an evening workshop on how to use the online bird database eBird. Please bring a WiFi-capable laptop if you are able – You will have the chance to start using eBird during the workshop!

Join Dave and Josh Haas for an informal photography session on fall color landscapes in and around the Kalamazoo Nature Center.
