Owls are busy selecting mates and setting up territory this time of year, so it’s the ideal time to explore the woods after dark and listen for owlish activity! Dress to be warm and walk quietly. No flashlights, please!
Students Acting and Volunteering for the Environment (S.A.V.E.)
S.A.V.E. is a volunteer, service learning, and outdoor education club for teens aged 14-17 that meets monthly September - May. Students will get the opportunity to engage in positive volunteer activities, learn important environmental, life and job skills, and take trips out into the field with KNC staff. New members are always welcome! A KNC student membership is only $25!

Participate in the Reading Together 2008! Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver is a powerful story about love, community, environmental crisis, and caring for the young and the aging. Enjoy lively discussion in the beautiful setting of the nature center. Books for purchase in the nature center’s Expedition Shop. We’ll conclude our discussion with a walk along the Trout Run stream.

Would you like to learn more about the birds visiting your feeder? Or would you like advice on feeder style, size, type of feed, etc? Bring the family – We’ll explore the world of birds and end the program by creating a feeder to hang at home!

Small Wonders: Groundhog Play
Saturday, February 9 OR Tuesday, February 12 from 9:30-11:30 am
*Fee: Members $2/child, Non-Members $3/child, Free for Adults (no admission fee for program participants)
Explore nature with your child! Interactive nature stations are set-up to encourage learning with your child, including time outdoors (weather permitting). No registration is required; just drop in! Children must be under age 5 and accompanied by an adult.

Nature Up Close Camp Director Dan Keto will take the group on a search for the earliest signs of the change in seasons. It might be February, but birds are returning from migration and wildflowers are stirring just under last year’s autumn leaves. So join us as we turn over a new leaf and find joy in a glimpse of spring.
Boomers and Beyond: Pioneer Maple Sugaring

Maple syrup is the first crop of the season. The dripping of the sap was celebrated by the Native Americans who later taught the art of collection to the pioneers. Dress warm, we’ll walk to the Pioneer sugar shack to see the old-fashioned process. We’ll finish inside the DeLano house with maple treats and warm discussion. Bring your lunch and a friend!
