In the 1980s, volunteers surveyed the entire state in a massive effort to record and map the birds which breed in Michigan. This information has proved invaluable to scientists and natural resource managers, but there are indications that bird distribution and abundance has changed since this atlas was created.
A second atlas effort, coordinated by the Kalamazoo Nature Center, began in 2002. Fieldwork ended in 2008 but we will accept any breeding season data for the years of 2002 through 2008 until December 31st. Please e-mail John or call 269-381-1574 x30 for more information about what data is needed.
Thank you to all of the volunteers, partner organizations, and donors for making 2008 such a success. We are now compiling and reviewing all of the data submitted. The new Atlas should be on-line in December of 2009. Each bird is available for sponsorship: E-mail Torrey or call 269-381-1574 x12 for which species are still available.
