Stewardship Field Crew (Seasonal Full Time)

Summary of Position

The Stewardship Field Crew Position will be responsible for providing on the ground management of natural areas. Management activities will include such things as: 1) woody and herbaceous plant control using hand and mechanical equipment and herbicides; 2) using prescribed fire; 3) Seed collection and native plant installations; 4) building trails, etc. The crew member will assist with planning field work, tracking budgets, and maintaining vehicles and equipment.  For more information and application instructions, view the complete job description here.

Biological Research Director

Summary of Position
Act as a member of the Conservation Stewardship team, facilitating research and educational programs on and off-site. This may include the following partners: state and local wildlife organizations, corporations, colleges, universities and high schools. DeLano Farms CSA Internship 

Summary of Position: 
The DeLano Farms Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Intern position is a three to five month (May-September) full-time position (40 hrs/week) with responsibilities in all farm production related activities including tillage, planting, cultivation, harvest, distribution.  We will be hiring two (2) interns for this season. This is a demanding and broadly diverse farming position that links college education theory with real world practice. Ideally, this internship will enable interns to: (a) integrate and use their knowledge and skills from the classroom, (b) discover where further competence is needed, (c) take steps to gain that competence under educational supervision, and (d) become better acquainted with the types of work settings in which such competence can be applied.  In addition significant contact with CSA shareholders and KNC staff and visitors demands interpersonal skills and communication abilities.  The Delano Farms Crew reports to the DeLano Farms Manager of the Kalamazoo Nature Center and works closely with all KNC staff. For more information and application instructions, view the full job description here.

DeLano Farms Apprentice

Summary of Position: 
The DeLano Farms Apprentices (we are hiring three) will join a small crew (generally 5-6 people) for all farm activities.  Responsibilities will include: plant propagation, tractor work, CSA harvest and distribution, farmers markets and completion of special projects as assigned by the DeLano Farm Manager. Each Apprentice will have an area of specialty for the season, such as irrigation, the greenhouse, cultivation, etc. They will be the eyes and ears of that specialty, you will have specific in depth training in that specialty.  Apprentices will report to the farm manager the needs and status of their area on a regular basis.
In addition to daily work and interactions with the farm manager, apprenticeships will include an educational training component. This includes specific study on subjects related to organic farming, relevant readings, classroom style sessions, and in the field “teachable moments”. We will attempt to visit other local farms through the season to study the diversity of farm designs and agricultural techniques in the area. Our goal is to provide each apprentice with a solid overall training about our farm systems in addition to more extensive training in their particular area of focus.  For more information and application instructions, view the full job description here.

DeLano Farms CSA Crew

Summary of Position: 

 The DeLano Farms CSA Crew position is a temporary, part-time (20-35 hours/week) position to run June – September.  We will be hiring 1 crew member. Responsibilities include composting, cultivating, harvesting, irrigating, washing and packing produce, seeding, transplanting, weeding, and other field chores as needed. This is an outdoor job that requires the ability to work in all conditions that do not threaten safety. Must be able to provide excellent relations at CSA shareholder pick-up. The DeLano Farms CSA Crew reports to the DeLano Farms Manager of the Kalamazoo Nature Center and works closely with the all KNC staff. The position is temporary, part-time with a variable weekly work schedule. Start date negotiable with related farm experience.

Barnyard Educator

Summary of Position:
The Barnyard Educator is a seasonal, part‐time (25 ‐ 40 hours/week) position from Mid‐April through Labor Day responsible for teaching programs for preschool, kindergarten and family audiences and caring for barnyard animals at the Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC). This position provides excellent experience for individuals who are majoring in education, recreation or environmental studies. Barnyard Educators work with professional educators and directors, will gain hands‐on animal care experience, enjoy rich learning opportunities and gain a variety of teaching techniques and ideas. Credit may be available through a college or university. In addition to leading school and public programs, barnyard educators prepare teaching materials and contribute their own creative ideas to programs.
